Dr BipinTheruvil has worked for about 25 years in Orthopaedics, of which 5 years were spent at the AIIMS, New Delhi. He spent 12 years in England during which 3 years were in the Southampton University Teaching Hospitals, and 4 years in a highly specialized joint replacement centre at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. He trained in advanced trauma management at the Region’s Hospital Minnesota, USA, as part of the prestigious international AO Trauma Fellowship.
He was one of the first surgeons, worldwide, to highlight the problems associated with metal on metal total hip replacements and hip resurfacings. His research work in Orthopaedics is recognized internationally. His works are referenced in many text books including Campbell’s Operative Orthopaedics and Rockwood and Green’s Fractures considered the two most important books internationally in orthopaedic surgery.
Dr Bipin graduated from the Government Medical College, Kottayam in 1994. He completed his post graduation (MS Orthopaedics) from the prestigious All India institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi as the best outgoing student in 1997. This was followed by two years of Senior Residency at the AIIMS. Here he trained in complex primary and revision joint replacements under Prof Surya Bhan and Prof Rajesh Malhotra, the pioneers of joint replacement surgery in North India.
In 1999 he left AIIMS to gain further experience in England. He started his work in England at the Peterborough District Hospital where he trained in the treatment hip fractures under Mr Martyn Parker who is widely accepted as the worlds leading authority in hip fracture management. He passed his FRCS (General Surgery) in May 2001.
Dr Bipin was one of the selected few, chosen to do Type 1 Specialist Registrar training at the Wessex Deanery in UK in 2003. Here he worked in 5 hospitals including the university teaching hospital at Southampton.
Dr Bipin passed his FRCS Tr&Orth exam in 2008 and was selected to do a years. Fellowship in Hip and Knee replacement at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. Here he gained a wealth of experience in primary and revision hip and knee replacement. His training in hip replacement was under the tutelage of Mr Robert Middleton, one of the leading hip surgeons in the UK and one of the designers of the CPT total hip replacement. He trained in knee replacements and arthroscopy under Mr Nick Fiddian, President of BASK (British Association for Knee Surgery).
Dr Bipin received his CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training) from the General Medical Council of United Kingdom in 2009 and started working as a Consultant specialising in Joint Replacement and Trauma at the Royal Bournemouth and Poole Hospitals. Royal Bournemouth Hospital is the third largest joint reconstruction facility in the UK, where almost 3000 joints are replaced annually. Here he headed the Derwent Joint Replacement Unit from Sep 2009 till June 2011. In July 2011 he returned to Kerala and started working as Senior Consultant in Orthopaedics at the Medical Trust Hospital, Kochi.
He is a recognized DNB teacher. His team consists of two Junior Consultants and a Fellow. He also has two DNB trainees doing thesis under him along with two other DNB trainees who train under him. He has authored several publications and a list of his international publications could be dowloaded from the PUBMED. His work has been recognized internationally and has been cited in many text books. These include Campbell’s Operative Orthopaedics and Rockwood and Green’s Fractures, considered the two most important books world wide in the field of orthopaedic surgery. Dr Bipin Theruvil is a reviewer for several journals including Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (British).
PERSONAL PROFILE
Dr Bipin is married and has two young children. He regularly plays badminton. He enjoys travel and in particular outdoor activity holidays, especially cycling, hiking and water sports.
