Total Knee Replacement
Total knee replacement is considered for patients with painful knees due to osteoarthritis, inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and also for post traumatic arthritis. In India the most common indication for a total knee replacement is advanced osteoarthritis of the knee, common symptoms of which include pain and stiffness. Clinical examination and X rays confirm the diagnosis. Most cases of osteoarthritis could be treated successfully with a combination of medications, physiotherapy and activity modification. Knee replacement is indicated only if all these measures fail.

I specialize in minimally invasive knee replacements and I also run an enhanced recovery programme for these patients. The advantage is that post-operative pain is less. Patients tend to mobilise early and generally get discharged on day 4 or 5 after surgery. They have regular dressing every three days till sutures are removed around 14 days following surgery.

Choice of the prosthesis design is extremely important. I generally choose the design in discussion with the patient. I would choose a prosthesis that has established long term results as published in international medical journals. Actually there are only a handful of hip and knee replacements which have published 10 or preferably 20 year results. I would insist on using one of these tried and tested designs.
